I used the old blanket trick to gather a shopping bag full of quills from two dead porkies a couple of years ago. That's a lot of quills and I probably won't have to do it again in this lifetime. It could be that my two porkies weren't as "fresh" as yours, but the blanket worked just fine. My wife dyes the quills then plaits or wraps pieces for ceremony. Porky quills were used before beads came west.

Ray, that is a good idea. I bet they are not cheap. If someone is sorting the quardhairs for ceremonial pieces, I would imagine that would be very painstaking. (lame joke emoticon here.)

Ron, that makes sense the more that I think about it. The little micro barbs on the quills an incredibly effective and painful. I know they don't like to let go. If you would, can you point out a place to see your wife's work. Sounds interesting. And I'm assuming you don't need a few more.

Beautiful flies, William. I saw at least three porcupines that had been hit by traffic along the roads in upper PA when I was driving up for steelehading last Novemeber. Unfortunately, none was in a location where I could pull over safely.

CB, if you look close you can see the urine stained wooly type fibers around the testicals of the armidillo. These fibers are ideal for a pattern that is only used for bull trout in the san juan and rio grande. (smiley)

That's good to know, but the question is: how do you get them to hold still? I might try to borrow a dog groomer's table the next time I head back to the farm.
