R'kill ~ All the A.J. steelie ties you've posted are great, but I like the third one (grey) the best. One of these days I'm going to have to find a way to fish for saltwater steelhead, and when I do, your dressings will get copied for my arsenal.

A Bill not a Dan so no hooks need here to add to my almost lifetime supply pile.
I actually saw you working at that Albany show. I tied SHs & Flymphs there one day and Steelhead flies the next. I also think Alec is a great tyer and person to visit with about his theories of fish vision and life in general.

Like willowhead suggested the videos of Jackson tying his Spades are the best way to get an understanding of the how and why of tying and fishing these flies. It is a simple fly to tie once you understand the important nuances by this master Steelhead angler. I love them as just big soft hackles.

I have some of A.J.'s hooks, and am particulaly fond of his premium Japanese silk for classic streamers and palmer fly bodies; I'll check out the videos -- thanks for the tip.

Re: 2 ostrich fly's
I've used ostrich herl for years on bodies of soft hackled flies and I love them. Yours look super. One thing I like to do that I don't see a lot of tiers do is mix the ostrich to get different shades. Like mixing dubbing. I often use three strands. My damsel patterns often have 2 green and 1 brown herl or my callibeatis is often 2 natural and one brown. You get the idea. This gives you an enormous amount of play with color.
I hate it when I think I'm buying organic vegetables, and when I get home I discover they are just regular donuts.
