Oversized feathers

I came upon this video not too long ago. It demonstrates one method for using over sized feathers on smaller hooks.

I have been using this method and like the tyer states, the hackle on the fly is not perfect but certainly fish worthy. This method has given me an oppurtunity to start using some of my "picked over" hen capes that I thought were no longer usefull for flys size 14 and smaller.
I know there are other methods, but this style sort of ,,,, how should I say? Fits me.

That's a keeper.
What surprised me was him using 140 denier thread on a size 14 hook. I generally do, but that's because I'm ham-handed.

Tie2fish, I am not the brightest bulb on the tree. I have kept track of Charlie Craven pryor to his owning his fly shop. That being said, I had forgotten his tutorials about using over sized feathers until, you posted those links. The light went ON over my head as soon as you posted the Blue Ribbon video, and the links to Charlies tutorials. The reason I say I am not the brightest bulb is, I couldnt get my over size hackle to look right just from a tutorial. The videos (yours and mine) sealed the deal, when I watched them then read the tutorials. It was kind of a "A HA" moment. It's kind of a nice feeling.

Think it may have to do with irriagation. Something the folks back East have NO concept of.
At least the way it is done in the West.
I be from back East and trying to understand it makes my head hurt...
They give directions by saying go Right or Left. NOT by go East till ya gets ta ... then turn South/North which ever ...

I use all the methods described and like them all!

Another method I show people at expos is to wind an oversized hackle in a normal fashion at some point (depending on feather size) down the shaft toward the bend of the hook. Then fold the oversized barbs forward to the eye and wrap and dub over them and the rest of the body. Then you fold the barbs back so they resemble a normal sized hackle wrap then tie down and finish the head.

DUBBN ~ For what it's worth, letumgo posted the other oversized hackle links. As for living out west, I would be there too if I could get my lovely spouse to pull up stakes. Actually, I lived in New Mexico for a couple of years and have a sister who lives in eastern Washington state that we have visited many times, in addition to making numerous ski trips out west and a couple of camping trips in the Tetons. I've fished Clarks Fork in Montana, the St. Joe in Idaho, the Snake and Gros Ventre in the Jackson Hole area, the Rio Grand in Colorado, the Deschutes in Oregon, and the Chama, Cimmarron, Pecos, Rio Grand and San Juan in New Mexico. I envy you for being able to live out there.
