Reffit's March Brown
Until the much anticipated Bob Smith/Philip Bailey book becomes available, I'll need to continue using the source information I have at hand regarding North Country spiders. Although it may not be historically beyond reproach, I will report from the Roger Fogg book that T.E. Pritt included following pattern devised by J.W. Reffit in his listing of alternative march brown imitations:
Hook: #14 (Daiichi 1550)
Thread: Hot orange tying silk (Pearsall's Gossamer #19)
Hackle: Small mottled brown feather from a snipe's rump (for which I have substituted a starling covert dyed brown that is marketed as a sub for landrail)
Body: Hare's poll fur dubbed on hot orange silk and dubbed 'full' at the thorax ...
This photo is lost.

Re: Reffit's March Brown
Great post. I like the transition of the dubbed body in particular on this. The starling is convincing too. I've never seen them died like that. This is a nice pattern to have on hand.
