My new fly

Post by fflutterffly » Sat Aug 13, 2011 9:44 pm

It floats in a glass of water and it's sunk as I pulled it through. I think I'll use it as a hopper pattern next week.

fflutterffly, Howdy;

That hopper is really taking shape. Well balanced (unlike me),

I likes it.

I agree -- use heavier-than-usual tippet when you throw this one in the water!

I need the name of this fly for my archives. Does anyone know the history or who originated it? I tied it to represent the slate gray hoppers we have in the Sierra.
Hook: Any long shanked hook I can pull from the pile Willowhead sent me. ololoo Size: 10-14
thread: BK or GR
Wire: Color of choice. (I've used red and dk Green)
Body: Big Bug 16 BK Wool Bug or Sparkle Gry dubbing.
Hackle: should be Grizzly (but I don't have any more)
Wing: Turkey (Treated with Sally Hansen)
Legs (collar) Partridge or Guinea hen (done both in natural and dyed orange.

Very cool tie; the guinea up front is inspired. :) One thing you might look at is using a pair of wing-slips--or, alternately, creasing a single slip of turkey so it's "tented" and narrower than the current wing. Both options will be a little more aerodynamic and probably won't twist your tippet as much as the wide, solid wing.

I originally tied it with a split. It looked good, but it sank faster. I used the one piece and it floated better.

Don't worry if it sinks.....it'll work just as well below the surface, and three false cast and it floats again.......till it sinks. :oops: :P .....think of it as casting practice. :D.....now watch, some ****** will say, "yeah, but the fish are in the water, not up in the air".....oppss, some dummie just did. :roll: ..... :lol:

seriously though.....creation bear is dead right. ;)
