Pow Wow Jewel

Post by gingerdun » Sun Aug 05, 2012 9:43 pm

This fly was designed for the Warm Water Flymph swap.

The construction method is nearly identical to the Dr Lyte Palmer that I posted last week, which was my first experience with palmered hackles.

My favorite spot for pan fish is the lower Pow Wow River, below the Jewell Street bridge, hence the name. My son-in-law pumps water from this stretch to irrigate his farm, so it is a little noisy during hot, dry weather, but beautiful nonetheless. The Pow Wow meanders back and forth between Amesbury, Massachusetts and South Hampton, New Hampshire, before it flows into little Lake Gardner. The water is slow enough so that canoe fishing is very relaxed. Since the pan fish aren't very picky, I took advantage of the opportunity to be playful with the design.

Materials in tying sequence:

Hook: 12 Grip 14723
Silk: Pearsall's Gossamer black
Collar Hackle: Rusty dun hen
Body: White tapestry wool
Rib: Gold oval tinsel (I wrap the rib hackle after the tinsel)
Tag: Yellow-orange wool
Rib hackle: White hen

That is a really striking design, Lance, and very well tied indeed.

Contrast, bling and lots of action...should get plenty of attention. Very nicely put together and a wonderful design. I'm looking forward to seeing this in person.

You all are very kind.

This is like concocting elaborate French pastries to feed to the dog.
Or tying miniature steelhead flies for crappies.
But it was a fun exercise in the mechanics of tying palmer flies, expanding my small tying repertoire.

Lance

PS: Getting those white barbs to show up against the white background in the photograph was actually more of an accomplishment than making the fly.

Can't wait. This look really nice. Then again what pattern on this site doesn't look nice .
Nice little story behind the fly as well.

Love the fly, and the name. In fact I have one named Pow Wow....lol. I think it was very early in 2012. Anyway, great work here, very nice indeed. The name rocks!
