I'm just wondering if the stone fly works well with fish?

Please don't take offence as none is intended but although it's a very realistic fly, and I applaud your tying skill of which I have little, it seems to look a bit 'hard' or 'wooden' for want of a better word. I'm wondering if it lacks 'life' that impressionistic flies made of fur and feather exhibit in water.

BTW I really like these and although they are also hard bodied the fibred thorax may give the impression of life & movement, a good contrast to the abdomen.

let alone tye on a 26...probably not even on a 20.

back in the 80's when larva lace (phil camera) and liqui-lace (mike tucker) first came out, i took a tying class hosted by mike tucker at the royal stevens fly shop in englewood, colorado and that stone fly was one of the flies we tied with liqui-lace. at the time, mike was filling his tubing with plain old vegetable oil to give the fly some sort of buoyancy and effects. i tied my stone fly without drawing up any oil into the tubing so that is why the tubing looks flat. i kept the stone fly that i tied that day and have never fished it.

i dont go for the realistic fly genre that much. i have an all black stone fly tied the same way. i applaud the tiers who like to tie realistics but i not so sure the fish them either. i read some posts on another fly tying board that realistics sure do look nice but dont really increase the hooking rate.

i read some posts on another fly tying board that realistics sure do look nice but dont really increase the hooking rate.

Doesn't increase hook up rate? .......I imagined they would 'decrease' hook up rate due to lack of movement. I guess i learned something.
