Y'all are tying some Ausable killers these days. :)

A question: when using the dubbing block, how do you handle what I assume to be a long staple fiber like fox underfur? Do you break it down a bit with scissors, then card it, or do you manage with whatever length comes off the pelt?

Jon ~ The fox on this was from a little bag that was left over after I used scissors to cut some mixed fur up into fairly small pieces for a touch-dubbed pattern a while back. I haven't yet got around to trying to actually card fibers prior to arranging them on the block, but I will admit to poking material into an approximate pattern with a dubbing needle before I bring the top thread strand over to trap it in place ;) .

Thanks for elaborating--at the very least the body really sets off that strongly-figured hackle. :)

Oooo, I love the jaunty tail! Beautiful pattern for mayfly spinners.

Fox and Hen

Same materials/techniques as above pattern except:
- Hook eye heated and turned slightly up
- Hackle is brown hen cape
- Tail whisks aligned vertically

Fly #2 is definitely a keeper, though if for some reason you miss the hook-set be sure to duck, or you might be a keeper, too.

Both very handsome flies. Really like the Red Grouse hackle on that 1st one. 2 Thumbs up

Hi Bill,

Nice flies and nice pictures too. I would like to see them wet if that is possible for you. Like to know how the orange thread of thebody brush works under water.

What do you think of a straight eye?? ;)

Ruard ~ Here is a clumsy photo of these flies in a glass of water. As for straight eye hooks, they are no longer required in Maryland.
