On another thread, Ray (letumgo) was kind enough to provide some links to small midge Soft Hackles that he tyed. I have had 24 hours for those little patterns to roll around in my head. I could have used hen hackle and made them look decent, but I wanted Partridge like Rays.
This is the 5th of 6 flies and is the best looking. Not even in Rays neighborhood as far as looks. Thats ok, I am still gonna catch fish with it before the year is out. If I do, I can brag that I caught fish on a Peacock and Partridge in one year, in sizes 20 to 10. Nobody that I know cares about my bragging but thats beside the point.

Hook - Mustad 3906 size 20
Thread - Sheer 14/0 Black
Body - Peacock Herl
Hackle - Partridge Tied in per Charlie Cravens method (

You know, it looked a lot better before I smashed it down putting it in my hackle pliers.

Very nifty wee fly and hard to get proportions looking right on a #20.... I think you managed that well.
Try stroking the hackle back toward the eye after you have placed it in the pliers, should sit up for you. Or hold the pliers in your hand and the fly in the steam of your kettle for a while and see if that bounces the fibres back for you.

Wayne, this is so cool. Every time you post the tiny flies from your vise I am so impressed. Any time I try to go smaller than size 16 I get really irritable. And you are not being fair to compare yourself in this way with Ray. You are using #20s, while he didn't dare go smaller than #19.

Wayne, you've MASTERED that hackling technique! Wow! I hope VERN-O sees this post, to see how effective this technique can be.
I can't wait to see your fishing photos, showing the results of field testing. I am convinced your going to succeed...
Brag away...PLEASE!

Wayne, I like seeing the technique you described, and to see it come off so effectively. It's something I really need to look into as a very viable option. Keep posting these kinds of patterns and it puts to rest any question of the technique. I love these. Thanks for sharing them.
