Been on the look-out for emerging midge patterns this last few days. This is from Malcolm Greenhalgh's Fly Fisher's Handbook, and he tells me it is a Breton pattern for a hatching midge. This is on a Kamasan B405 #16, orange and black silk waxed (the wax is me, not Greenhalgh ) and black genetic hen hackle.

Great looking fly Andrew and I might tie up a few of these.
I was recently watching an olive hatch on the Wharfe and I was interested to see how the nymph actually changed colour as it progressed into hatching. It went from pale green to almost a grey.olive. But the main thing that struck me was the protrusion of the wing buds which were almost black.
Now, I wish I was back at my desk because I think a two tone fly that was black on the front and a steely green on the rear with a dun coloured hackle might just work.
Hey wait a minute! what I am talking about here. Isn't that exactly what a lot of the NC patterns were - Waterhen Bloa, Greenwells etc etc.
Looks like it is back to basics. Damn, I thought I had another pattern to fill up my boxes

Well if I can find this one again amidst all the others on my desk, I might just give it a throw.

Am having some problems getting some very selectively feeding trout to take any of my offerings. Always in the same place on the river, and it is tiny midges coming off - bodies can't be more than 3 -4 mm long, olive coloured, and some going on white coloured. I am going to try to catch some today to photograph. See if I can knock something up. If they are any good, i'll put up pics over the next few days.

I've got them to take a #20 GRHE before now, but not this last couple of days...

edited to say: re the selectively feeding fish. This is always at the same spot of the river, and yesterday there were dark olives on the water. I could see the fish lying low, and they were ignoring olives that i could see actually on the water passing them overhead, yet coming up to sip on these little midges. Elsewhere on the river, they were coming up for my Dark Olive pattern. Needless to say, they politely declined to take any of my flies - They are infuriating, actually!

I had missed this post as well. Lovely little fly Andrew. I'd like to try the and the green/black/dun version you mentioned above.

For a midge, I think I would try a red rear and black front with a badger or grizzly hackle. I would probably lesson the red to about 1/3 to 1/4 of the total body length. Maybe a little tinsel flash under the red? OK...off to the vise I go.

Sounds promising again, will give it a go - still couldn't get them to take yesterday... exactly the same spot! Did try this fly, but it is way too big. Didn't catch any flies to photograph - decided to take the little rod and do a spot of fishin' instead - I am weak...

But, further upstream, caught my best ever fish on this little stream by far - 14 " brownie - on one of my own patterns as well

And on a 4 wt 6ft fibreglass Jet, I knew I had it on as well!
