Wow Bill that's beautiful! And you're making me feel guilty. I've been busy with another project the last couple of weeks and have done very little tying other than to try out my new vise.

Re: Another CFR Fly
Bill - Amazing silk work. Simply perfect, in my opinion. I have tried the Alex Jackson silk, but I did not get results this nice. Your use of 14/0 thread is a excellent choice for an ultra smooth underbody.
I have a question about the hackle. You indicate that it is from a Greenwells hen set. The hackle fibers seem to have a bit of marking to them (faint barring - almost like Cock Del Leon/CDL). Does your Greenwell set have barring on them? Where did you buy the hackle? I now "need" a Greenwells hen set for Christmas...

Re: Another CFR Fly
Thanks, folks. Ray ~ There is no thread underbody on this; I tied the hackle in tip first, and then both the tinsel and silk in right behind it (silk on top). Then, keeping the flat tinsel pulled straight back along the far side of the hook, I wrapped the silk over it back to the butt and then back up front and tied it off. Then I palmered the rib up and tied it off before wrapping the hackle and finishing the head. The hackle is one from the soft saddle patch of a Collins Greenwell hen set (see photos below). I own six Greenwell skins, four of which are from the Collins Hackle Farm (Pine City, NY) and two from Bob's Hackle Farm in PA. Each one is a little different, especially the saddle patches that Charlie Collins has historically included free when you order one of his capes. Check out his website for pricing.

Re: Another CFR Fly
Thanks for the tying instructions Bill. I understand how you go such perfect results.
Damn, those Collins hen sets are pretty, ain't they. I just love the subtle markings on the saddle feathers. Like I said, it reminds me of CDL.

Re: Another CFR Fly
Bill, these are very classy. CFR should do very well auctioning these. Thanks too for posting the pic of the Collins neck and saddle. Ray asked me a couple months ago to post a pic of a saddle that I had been using for several successive flies that I posted. I failed to get to that, but this is the saddle. Dead ringer. I bought a number of these from Charlie a few years ago.
Bill, you've set a high mark.
